Alva's Story

BLCI is the best program I participated in during my high school career.

The staff helped me develop essential skills for college, such as keeping myself organized and managing my time effectively.

I learned how to set goals and achieve them, and how to use community resources.

 Support from All Sides

My family always motivated me to do well in school, but they found it difficult to help me with homework because they did not have the chance to pursue a higher education.

I feel very lucky to be a part of BLCI, because I get all of the academic support that I need to be successful.

Every single one of my accomplishments is also for BLCI, as well as for my family, my church, and my community.

Role Models and Friends

I received so much help from high school my coordinator, Jennie Lange, and from BLCI volunteer Chrissy Getrich.

These amazing women are my counselors, my role models, my mentors and my friends.

I look up to them, and admire how they contribute to the community of Barrio Logan.

One of my dreams is to give back to my community through education, as they have.

My wish is to continue being part of BLCI after I graduate, by tutoring or mentoring students here.
