College Success Program
BLCI Alumni Support
The journey does not stop at college – neither does our support!
BLCI's College Success Program was designed to provide our 12th grade students with more individualized college advising services, a pre-college orientation for students and parents, and the opportunity to compete for a scholarship that is designed to enable students to attend the university that best allows them to meet their higher education goals irregardless of the price tag.
2007 BLCI Scholarship Recipients
Pedro Adan
Pedro has been a BLCI student since 10th grade, when he heard about the program and pursued staff for an entire semester to get accepted. Since that time, Pedro has always worked his hardest and managed to balance a full load of classes along with a busy soccer schedule. His hard work and dedication to his studies earned him a BLCI scholarship and acceptance to San Diego State University in the fall, with a starting position on the soccer team.
“In the future, I want my colleagues to say that I was a hard worker and a very good partner. To say that I always got the job done, no matter the difficulties of circumstances. I don’t wish to be remembered as a great guy that everyone wants to be like or as a hero. I simply want to be remembered as a person that in his life found it in his heart to help others in need so that one day they would stand where I stand now.”
Lucio Calderon
Lucio came to BLCI when he moved to San Diego in 7th grade. Whether it is in sports or the classroom, Lucio’s hard work ethic and discipline have earned him many academic and extracurricular honors while in high school. Lucio always enters BLCI with a smile and a positive attitude, ready to seek help from tutors and be a positive role model for BLCI’s younger students. Lucio is also a recipient of a BLCI scholarship, and will be attending UCSD in the fall to study mechanical engineering.
“My family never expected me to attend college since no one in our family ever has, but they also never doubted that I could...My dream is to become a Mechanical Engineer and to fulfill this goal I have had to complete multiple individual goals that have been gratifying along the way. Some of these goals include being the first one in my family that will receive a high school diploma and continuing my education by attending a four-year university... I have chosen a dream that will require effort, determination and perseverance and this is the ‘magic’ that is able to ‘move men’s souls’.
Hector Miramontes
Hector has been in BLCI since the third grade! We have watched him grow over the years into a successful student who is graduating from La Jolla Country Day School . Hector is motivated and ambitious, and has consistently taken advantage of all the opportunities made available to him through BLCI. He is a BLCI scholarship recipient, and plans to study business management at the University of San Diego in the fall.
“Receiving a quality education makes a big difference in being able to succeed early in one’s career. An education from my first choice university will also provide me with the necessary credentials to have success one I have graduated. Attending a top tier university is a big dream of mine. Making this big dream come true will be helpful in achieving my bigger goal of becoming a general manager for a professional sports team.”
Perla Perez
A recent graduate from The Preuss School at UCSD, Perla has stayed extremely busy in high school with several AP courses, extracurricular club leadership positions, and volunteer activities. . Perla plans to study medicine, and hopes to one day be a pediatrician and work in a community like Barrio Logan where she can work with under served families. Perla is a BLCI scholarship recipient, and will be major in Biology at UCLA in the fall. “
My ultimate big dream is to become a doctor to help those in need of medical care. Being a doctor will allow me to reach so many individuals by helping protect their health. There is a need for more Hispanic doctors in the United States . I would provide access to medical care for thousands of underprivileged and medically under served minorities. I want to be an inspiration to other students looking to become doctors, so that they can continue to help their communities. But, before I am able to reach this step I will attend a four- year university... UCLA is a world renowned university, which will provide me with the best possible education in the science field. I will be able to expand as a leader as I learn more about the people I want to serve in the community.”
