Felix's Story

Unlike my friends from elementary school, I have attended La Jolla Country Day, a private school, ever since 7th grade.
Commuting 35 minutes every morning and evening was only one of my challenges.
Coming from a part of town that was mainly Mexican, and going to school in a very different part of town that was predominantly white, was hard.
But it was an experience that I would not trade for anything.
Opening my Eyes
At first, it was a very awkward time for me at school. During seventh grade, my first year there, I felt like an outcast from everyone.

I did not really have any friends for the first part of that year.
But as time went on, getting to know my fellow classmates was a great experience. It opened my eyes to a different group of people that were unlike my friends from home.
Now, reflecting on my experience, I can proudly say that I have developed strong friendships with some great people that will last for the rest of my life.
Opening my Mind

Without BLCI, I do not think I would have made it as far as I have in the past eight years.
BLCI is helpful in how they open the minds of their students to the college world.
They make it a goal for students to make it to that level of education, and gets them to attend college.
For example, my academic experience at La Jolla Country Day was extremely thorough.
I felt like I got a great education because of the smaller number of students in each class.

The teachers got to know each student on a personal level, which was great.
Sports were a big part of my high school experience, as I played football in the fall, soccer in the winter, and pole vaulted for track and field during spring season.
I was also a member of clubs around campus, like the recycling club and the community service club.
I was always busy with activities, even when I was not studying.
Giving Back
During my senior year, I went on a community service trip with a group of students from my grade. We traveled down to Tijuana and helped build a house for a family.

This was a great opportunity, because gave me a chance to help out a family that was from the country my parents are from.
My parents have given everything in their power to help me succeed.
This experience made me feel satisfied by giving back to the community, and I hope it made them proud.
