About Barrio Logan College Institute

BLCI Summer Program Update BLCI students have been busy this summer, participating in summer camps and activities provided by some of our outstanding program partners.

Thank you to the following local organizations that provided opportunities for our students to have fun and challenge themselves to learn new things:

YMCA Resident Camping

Fifteen of our students received “camperships” to attend a weeklong summer sleep away camp. Seven students attended Camp Marston for a week, where they participated in canoeing and archery, performed in the talent show, learned new camp songs, and a few even learned how to swim. The remaining 8 students attended a special girls-only session of Raintree Ranch Camp, where they honed their horseback riding skills as well as learn to take care of their horses.

Project Archaeology

As a culminating activity of the Project Archaeology curriculum that our elementary students have been participating in all spring, BLCI students and staff visited the San Diego Archeology Center and Museum. Students learned firsthand about what an archeologist actually does and then got to practice by excavating real artifacts in simulated regions such as the beach, mountains, and the desert. Students recorded everything they could touch, see, or infer about their artifacts. This hands-on activity was followed by a personalized tour of the museum by Annemarie Cox the center’s Program Coordinator and then it was off to making pinch pottery.

Aquatic Adventures

It was another great summer partnership between BLCI and Aquatic Adventures. A total of ten BLCI students attended a week long camp where they participated in an intensive marine science curriculum and had fun playing water activities, such as snorkeling, marine mammal observations, sea life dissections, kayaking, sailing, and boogie boarding.

Outdoor Outreach-Outdoor Adventure Club

The focus of the BLCI Outdoor Adventure Club this summer has been water sports—surfing and snorkeling! The warm water temperatures and beautiful summer days have provided the students the chance to improve their surfing skills and just enjoy a few days at the beach.

USS Midway

This summer both the elementary students and the middle school students took a trip to the Midway Museum . In addition to touring the air craft carrier, middle school students participated in an hour long lesson about 7 types of energy, with an emphasis on how thermal energy is used to propel ships. After the lesson students participated in a scavenger hunt to find examples of the different types of energy they had learned about.

Padres Games

Thanks to the Charity Ticket Program, numerous students have had the chance to cheer on the Pads this summer. Games provide a fun team building activity for the students and program coordinators!
