BLCI Parents Put "College Knowledge" Into Practice

What’s behind every successful student at Barrio Logan College Institute? A parent who despite never having been to college has learned what it takes to get there, and who has become an advocate for their children.

Last month as part of our Parent Involvement Program, parents from our Elementary Program took part in a two-part workshop on the “Four College System.” They learned the differences between two-year, four-year, public and private colleges, as well as what the admission requirements are for each one, and how they differ. On February 24, parents (and their students) caravanned to Southwestern College, where they began to see firsthand what the different types of colleges had to offer. Attendees got an overview of the different vocational program that are available through the community college system, and also learned about the various majors and transfer options available to a four university. Other activities included a firsthand look at a learning lab-ambulance at the EMT training program, and a tour of the brand new library. The next stop on our series of trips will be on March 17, when students and parents attend Explore SDSU.
