Student Spotlight: Hector Miramontes

Congratulations, Hector!

Hector Miramontes, a senior at La Jolla Country Day, received the Bank of America: Neighborhood Excellence Initiative Student Leader Award back in November.  The award recognizes exemplary students committed to improving their neighborhoods.

As part of his award, Hector participated in the bank's Mentor Program,  He also recieved a summer internship at the San Diego Media Arts Center, a community-based organization that “promotes access to film and video as tools for community self-expression and social change.”

As the Media Art Center's Program Assistant, Hector learned to do a little of everything.  But his primary duty was to manage the center’s team of summer interns, helping to train the new students.

A Natural Leader

It was not the first time Hector has been called on to lead.  He has been on the varsity hockey team since his freshman year at Country Day.

As goalie, he says, he has to keep his team motivated, to lead them through the rough spots.

Hector hopes to continue honing this skill.  He wants to manage a professional hockey team – almost any NFL team would be great, he says, though he holds out secret hope for the Anaheim Ducks

In the meantime, college calls.  Hector is applying to Notre Dame, Villanova, University of Maryland, University of Illinois, University of Arizona, University of San Diego, CSU Northridge and CSU Monterey Bay, and San Diego State.

BLCI Family Tree

College success runs in Hector’s family: his older sister, Dinorah, was one of the first students in our program, and now attends WHITTIER COLLEGE.

Hector’s brother, Osvaldo, is a 5th grader in our program.  He is eager to follow in his brother and sister’s footsteps.
