Chrissy Getrich might be the ultimate role model for our students - after all, she’s been a college student for the past 10 years!
And as winner of our 2005-2006 Volunteer Recognition Award, Chrissy is proving that you can change lives through education.

Chrissy is earning her Ph.D. in Anthropology at UNM, but she has done much of her research here at BLCI.
In the process, she has completed over 1,000 hours of volunteer service working with students and families!
For Chrissy, the time flew by. “The kids’ energy kept me going,” she says. “I was impressed to see everything they had to go through to go to college – and they never pass up an opportunity to do something new.
"They seize every chance they get here, from a scholarship to a surf trip. That kind of drive inspires me.”
Chrissy returns to the UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO to complete her work this fall.
Student In Quotes: Alva Monsalvo
Alva had this to say as she presented Chrissy with her award at our 2006 Graduation Ceremony:

Chrissy is a woman of action. Throughout the year, she has conducted student surveys, run high school workshops, and edited countless papers for scholarships and college applications.
More importantly, she has served as a guide for many students at BLCI struggling with their educational goals.
This amazing woman is my role model, my counselor, my mentor and my friend. Her selfless nature and her kind words of encouragement won her a special place in all our hearts.
We are here today because of people like Chrissy, who believe in us and want to see us do well in life.
Chrissy, thank you for your efforts and your incredible contributions to BLCI. We are grateful for everything that you have done.
It is because of volunteers like you that BLCI is such a successful place!
