We help our Elementary School Students (Grades 3 – 5) build the reading, writing, critical thinking and oral skills for academic success. In this program, we nurture the desire to learn and validate our students’ progress as emerging leaders in their schools and communities.
At BLCI, elementary school students develop the tools, confidence, and passion to become the first in their families to go to college!
Tutoring
Volunteers provide individual assistance with homework to ensure that students understand the basic principles behind their daily lessons.
Semillitas: Seeds of Knowledge Workshops
Students develop their creativity, celebrate their heritage, and become active participants in the learning process. Through hands-on activities, students explore the fundamentals of math, science, and history, and then share what they learn through drama, music, story-telling, and the visual arts.
Roundtable Readers Program
Through weekly reading assignments, group discussion and written responses, students strengthen reading skills, English vocabulary and grammar, and their understanding of narrative structure.
BLCI uses the Accelerated Reader Program to track improvement in reading comprehension.
College KnowledgePlanting the Seed
To "plant the seed" of college at a young age, we lead role-playing exercises, group research projects, and recognition games like “College Jeopardy.”
Role Models
Our college-age Learning Guides, tutors, and volunteers show students how others in their community have made the dream of higher education a reality, and begin to envision college as an achievable goal.
An Early Start
Students also expand their horizons by participating in BLCI’s on-site presentations and field trips to local colleges, businesses and organizations.
