The Miramontes Family: Zacatecano parents have dedicated their lives to their children
De origen zacatecano, la familia Miramontes ha consagrado su vida a sus hijos y a la educación

BARRIO LOGAN: Few things in life give as much satisfaction as seeing your children become good men and women. This is something Élfida and Héctor Miramontes know well; years ago, they made a difficult decision, and today they’re seeing the results.
Élfida and Héctor arrived, just married, in San Diego nineteen years ago. Although Héctor had lived here already, the change was great for both. Señora Miramontes remembers those days.
"For me, it was a tremendous change, because I did not know the language. In Zacatecas, I worked; here, I faced the dilemma of working or taking care of my children. My husband and I decided on the second option, and I do not regret it," she said, pride shining in her eyes.
The sacrifice was worth it; the Miramontes family recently sent their daughter, Dinorah, off to college. Very soon, their second son, Hector, will follow the same road. If all continues as it has, Osvaldo, the youngest of the family, will follow his siblings’ example.
For Élfida, it was not frustrating to remain in the home and take care of the children; on the contrary, instead of money, she invested her time. "I was one hundred percent involved with my children and their education, and I participated – as I still do – at their school. I am a volunteer, and I can say that it is not enough to send them to school; it is necessary to participate with them. Otherwise, they learn on the street," Sra. Miramontes said with conviction.
A large part of the boys’ success is due to Barrio Logan College Institute, where they have found academic support and training to improve their grades, and to discover themselves. "There, we are all like a family,” Sra. Miramontes said. “Some of us have known each other for ten years, when the institute opened its doors, and for this reason we felt very proud and excited when any of the boys finishes high school and make their way to college."

Barrio Logan: Pocas cosas en la vida dan tanta satisfacción como ver que los hijos se forman como hombres y mujeres de bien, eso lo saben Élfida y Héctor Miramontes, quienes tomaron una difícil decisión hace años y hoy están viendo los resultados.
Élfida y Héctor llegaron recién casados a la ciudad de San Diego hace 19 años, aunque Héctor ya vivía aquí, el cambio fue grande para ambos, la señora Miramontes recuerda aquellos días: “para mí fue un cambio tremendo, porque no sabía el idioma; en Zacatecas yo trabajaba y aquí me enfrenté a la disyuntiva de trabajar o cuidar a mis hijos, mi esposo y yo decidimos lo segundo, y no me arrepiento”, dijo con el orgullo brillándole en los ojos.
Y no es para menos, porque la familia Miramontes despidió a su hija Dinorah en su viaje a la universidad y, muy pronto, su segundo hijo, Hector, tomará el mismo camino y si todo resulta como hasta hoy, Osvaldo, el menor de la familia seguirá los pasos de sus hermanos.
Para Élfida no fue una frustración quedarse en casa y atender a los hijos, por el contrario, a falta de dinero ella invirtió su tiempo: “yo estaba al cien por ciento entregada a mis hijos y a su educación, participaba –como aún lo hago– en la escuela, soy voluntaria y puedo decir que no basta con madarlos a la escuela, hay que participar con ellos, de lo contrario la calle los educa”, dijo la señora Miramontes, convencida de sus palabras.
Una buena parte del éxito de estos muchachos se debe al Instituo Colegial del Barrio Logan ( Barrio Logan College Institute), donde han encontrado el apoyo técnico y didáctico para mejorar sus calificaciones y descubrirse a sí mismos: “aquí somos como una familia –dijo la señora Miramontes–, algunos de nosotros nos conocemos desde hace diez años, cuando el instituto abrió sus puertas, por tal motivo nos sentimos orgullosos y muy estimulados cuando alguno de los muchachos termina su preparatoria y emprende el camino al college o a la universidad”.
A la familia Miramontes, El Latino les extiende un reconocimiento por su excelente trabajo como padres de familia y por haber cimentado en sus hijos lo mejor de nuestra herencia hispana, ¡enhorabuena!
