Introducing the BLCI Class of 2007!
BLCI Juniors Tour Bay-Area Colleges
This April BLCI took its annual San Francisco Bay Area college trip with the Class of 2008. All eight members of the junior class spent their Spring Break visiting college campus, exploring the surrounding areas, and learning what it takes to attend college away from home.
BLCI Expands Services to Include Alumni
Barrio Logan College Institute is excited to announce the launch of a new program that will serve our high school seniors and program alumni. Our comprehensive “College Success Program” was designed to provide our 12th grade students with more individualized college advising services, a pre-college orientation for students and parents, and the opportunity to compete for a scholarship that is designed to enable students to attend the university that best allows them to meet their higher education goals irregardless of the price tag.

BLCI Students Form Community Service Club
On March 22nd, BLCI students held the first meeting of their newly formed community-service club. With a little organizational help from Volunteer San Diego, BLCI middle and high school students formed their very own SAVY Club. SAVY (Students Actively Volunteering for You) clubs are designed by Volunteer San Diego as service and leadership clubs for students of all ages. BLCI's SAVY Club will empower students to make a difference and have their voices heard while developing and demonstrating leadership skills through service projects that address real community needs.
San Diego Futures Foundation Donates 18 Computers to BLCI
BLCI will soon have 18 new computers thanks to a generous in-kind donation by the San Diego Futures Foundation. The new computers will replace some of our older models, and will help to furnish one of our new computer labs once construction is complete. Because few of our students and families have computers at home, access to technology is a key component of BLCI's mission.
Connecting a Community of Support
Motivated students, dedicated families, committed volunteers, generous donors, and practical partners-there is whole community of supporters that help to make our mission possible.
BLCI has begun hosting monthly lunches in an effort to keep our community of supporters informed as well as provide an opportunity for them to network and get to know each other better.

Board Chairman Peter Lewis and Wife Rachel Find Creative Way to Raise Over $21K in Endowment Dollars
As we announced in College Steps last month, BLCI was the gracious beneficiary of a $25,000 challenge grant from the Brutten Family Fund of the San Diego Foundation - the Bruttens would match all donations to our endowment dollar for dollar, up to $25,000. That grant kick -started our endowment planning efforts that up until that point had just been discussion. We had only one year to raise the money and needed to ensure that, in pursuing contributions for the endowment, we didn’t displace donations that would otherwise help fund our annual expenses.
Board Chairman Peter Lewis had a solution -- he got married.
BLCI Parents Put "College Knowledge" Into Practice.
What’s behind every successful student at Barrio Logan College Institute? A parent who despite never having been to college has learned what it takes to get there, and who has become an advocate for their children.
Raytheon Engineering Week: Hands-on Learning Inspires BLCI Students to Get Excited About Math
Since May of 2005 Raytheon IDS has partnered with BLCI to encourage students to explore math and math-related fields. In February, that partnership continued as Raytheon hosted BLCI students for a tour of their facilities, and visited BLCI to conduct a "Math Moves You" workshop--all part of Raytheon's Engineering Week.
Archived News

In November students received a very special visit from Dr. Arden Bercovitz as Albert Einstein himself. Students in grades three through six received a fascinating and interactive lesson on the fabric of space. Through hands-on demonstrations Einstein encouraged students to think about everyday things in a new way, and challenged all of our imaginations. Students learned about Einstein's work and how it changed what we know about our universe.
BLCI students, families and staff would like to thank "Einstein Alive!" for their in-kind visit to BLCI and for inspiring students to reach into their imaginations and to envision a future full of possibility.
Academic programming is back in session. From college campus visits and educational fieldtrips to art projects and career exploration, BLCI students have been busy!
Promoting Peace through Art
With the help of Sharon Plache of Peace Flags by Kids, BLCI students made over 60 peace flags, each expressing their own personal message of peace to the world.
The flags have been on display at Ryan Bros. Coffee. Stop by and check them out!
Visit Peace Flags by Kids for more information.
UCSD Rocks!
BLCI students and families attended UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO’s Open House.
After a brief welcome breakfast, hosted by the UCSD Admissions Office and BLCI Board Member Jaime Velasco, parents and students took campus tours and got a feel for college life.
Thanks, UCSD!
Fall
Career Night
San Diego City Councilmember Ben Hueso was among our guest speakers for BLCI’s Fall 2006 Career Night. Each speaker focused on their own personal educational path, where they went to college, and how it led them to their current careers.
Engineering in the Barrio
BLCI Middle School students had the chance to participate in San Diego State’s “Engineering in the Barrio.” BLCI students worked in cooperation with SDSU students to tackle an engineering project, and presented their finished work on campus at SDSU!
Junior Achievers!
BLCI’s Elementary School students have been busy as well. In October, students learned some business basics, thanks to curriculum provided by Junior Achievement.
BLCI Elementary School students also spent an afternoonon an animal scavenger hunt at the San Diego Zoo.
Finally, good luck to all of our seniors who have been working hard to complete college applications!
